Bait And Lures

Fishing bait and lures are used to catch fish, but they are completely different from each other. Both involve the use of a rod, reel and hook, but fishing bait refers to placing food for the fish on the hook before casting the line into the water. Worms are used quite often in freshwater fishing, while saltwater fishing involves the use of smaller fish, such as anchovies and minnow.

Fishing lures are objects at the end of a fishing line concealing the hook. They are designed to catch the attention of the fish that will snap at the bright colors and get caught by the hook. There can be up to three hooks on one lure. When using a lure, the angler casts out the line and either trolls the line by slowly reeling it in or by engaging in casting out, waiting for a short time, reeling in and casting out again.

Lures are sold wherever fishing equipment is sold, but many angling enthusiasts also make their own. There are many different types of lures, such as:

Jig – this is a hook with a lead weight attached. Commercial recreational fishermen use this type of lure to catch codfish.
Surface lures – often called top water lures, they are shaped like fish and float on the top of the water.
Spoon lures - shaped like the bowl of a spoon, they are thin and shiny to attract fish.
Plugs – these lures run through the water at fast speed mimicking the small darting fish that are often food for the larger ones.
Artificial flies – lures made to resemble insects
Bass worms – made of rubber or plastic, these lures look like worms
Spinners – pieces of bent wire with a shiny mechanism that spins on one end and a hook on the other.
